Mamie Till forced America to confront the racist murder of her son. Chinonye Chukwu is a filmmaker intent on telling her from a black woman’s perspective
, bright sunlight filters through the mid-century car windows as a mother and her 14-year-old son drive into central Chicago, singing along to the Moonglows’ sugary doo-wop classic “Sincerely”.
That this mother, played with moral fortitude and wrenching anguish by Danielle Deadwyler, is Mamie Till, and her son, Emmett, would become famous the world over for his horrific murder, only makes these sunny, brightly appointed memories all the more difficult to watch. These snapshots of the idylls and rhythms of ordinary black family life in 1955 Chicago are key to the subtle power of.
The film takes as its subject a mother wracked by unimaginable grief finding near-superhuman reserves of courage to ensure that her son’s lynching does not go unpunished or unnoticed by a racist America all too keen to turn its head the other way. We all know the story: while Till was visiting some cousins in theof Mississippi, the boy was accused by a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, of wolf-whistling at her.
If Mamie Till forced America to look at the rot and hatred at the heart of the nation, Chukwu’s depiction of her struggle reminds us that even in the most shameful moments of the past, courageous women did what they had to, and that we have much to thank them for.
