The legendary broadcaster once again stole the show at the Paris Olympics earlier this month as his enthusiastic play-by-play calls wowed the nation.
McCarthy is a highlight of RTE's Olympics coverage every four years and was the star of the show in Paris this Summer with many fans saying that McCarthy was the highlight of the event. "As a commentator, I believe my job is to inform the audience about what they see on screen, but also entertain them. I think that's a very important point, and thankfully, a lot of people seem to be enjoying it."
"Despite sustaining a career-threatening leg injury in 1985, with Blue Demons of Cork he’d win three leagues , three National Championships, a National Cup and in 1983 he captained the team to a historical Federation Cup victory, a highly-prestigious competition at the time featuring teams from England, Wales and Scotland.
"In 1998 he was head coach of the first Irish U16 girls’ team to compete at the European championships level in over a decade. Then in 2001 he was head coach to the senior men’s team in the European championship qualifiers.
