Former pupils of Walz have rushed to his defence, praising his record not only as teacher and sports coach, but also as a mentor to young people. “But if you had asked me when I was 17 and 18, I would have truly said he left an impression on me, because he was so authentic. He was so passionate.” It seems that the smear campaign against Walz is being orchestrated by Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign who in 2004 was involved in a not dissimilar attempt to undermine the Democratic candidate John Kerry, a US Navy veteran who was wounded in the Vietnam War and who was awarded a Purple Heart and other honours.
