The idea of the next AFL CEO being someone in the mould of those who have come before would, for many, be a misstep. | OPINION by Rana Hussain

Immediately speculation began as to who might replace McLachlan despite the current CEO giving himself a season’s farewell tour., Andrew Dillon, Sam Mostyn, Kylie Rogers. All worthy. All capable. Skill sets around business acumen, nerves of steel and a politician’s smile have already been centred in conversations of who will succeed. As suggested inReal Footy Podcast, the job of AFL CEO is more a political appointment than corporate leader.
My real hope is that there is someone on the AFL commission who will make the case for perhaps a more radical choice. Many have spoken about how expertly McLachlan has led the game safely through a pandemic and that now that it’s over he can vacate the role. The underlying sentiment that the pandemic is both over and there are no impending global crises is sweet, but myopic.
Research paper after research paper tells us of a battle with the climate we have largely lost, wealth inequality we cannot sustain and a mental health crisis post pandemic that affects us all. Away from the academia of it all, you can feel it in the air. At the crux of it, we have all spent the last two years staring mortality, isolation and a decaying, rupturing world square in the face.
One of McLachlan’s biggest failings was his handling of the racism Adam Goodes faced and his lack of both understanding and an ability to take a clear stand.
