The Emmy-winning producer/director took a break from prep on his hit HBO show to discuss the opportunity for Japan to become a more competitive global production hub.

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters

— Schrader’s now classic, semi-experimental biopic about the iconoclastic Japanese author Yukio Mishima. Poul accepted the job and decamped with Schrader to Japan, eventually becoming an associate producer on the film while earning his entree into the business at Tokyo’s Toho Studios, wherewas filmed with an all-Japanese cast and crew. That experience led to Poul associate producing Ridley Scott’s Japan-set Yakuza crime film — and from there, with his foot in the door, Poul returned to the U.S.
