Tommy Walsh was one of those kids once, a GAA star who moved to the AFL. History is repeating itself, with Kerry hit hard by the loss of young players, with three currently on the books of Australian Rules sides.
Former Australian Rules player and Kerry All-Ireland winner Tommy Walsh says the GAA can make it more tempting for young AFL targets to stay at home.
Walsh’s comments on the Mike Quirke Podcast - which is fundraising for the Tír na nÓg Foundation - come after Kerry recently lost a third player to the AFL after Geelong signed emerging Kingdom star Cillian Burke. “They come selling a professional sport to our younger players. It is hard for young players not to look at a professional career in sport.
“From a club and county perspective you have invested so much in this person to get them to the top level and just when they are on the cusp of it they are leaving,” he said. "It’s obviously devastating from that point of view. “They’ve been educated. I’m not necessarily talking about payment, but that there can be something along those lines just to give them a decision to make.
