The candidates came out swinging from the very first question
With only a couple of months left until the June primary election, the five leading candidates in the race to become mayor of Los Angeles came out swinging against each other in Tuesday evening’s debate.“It’s great to see Rick Caruso here, finally… for joining us, Rick,” mayor candidate Joe Buscaino said, taking the first barrage of shots at billionaire developer Rick Caruso.
“It’s irresponsible to say the homelessness issue is only about housing. We have a drug addiction epidemic, dangerous meth. People are not in the right mind frame to say yes to help,” Caruso said. “What you can’t do is say, ‘We’re going to allow some certain encampments to be in certain parts of this,'” Caruso shot back.“We need to hire mental health specialists to get our LAPD officers off the mental health frontlines and back on the line of duty to protect and serve,” de León said.
“And instead of taking a look at our city and saying, ‘The pie is only so big, and so we can only afford to do so many things and if we’re going to add more offices, we have to cut other things,’ why don’t we focus on growing the pie,” Caruso said.“I’m prepared to release my taxes tomorrow for the last five years,” Feuer said to Caruso. “Are you?”The candidates attacked Caruso for his wealth and being out of touch.“I’ll just be five seconds on this,” Caruso said.
