The biggest match in school history has a cast of stars: Setter Gabby Blossom is a first-team All-American, Grace Frohling second team and Katie Lukes third team.
On a cold Wednesday morning in Omaha, Neb., where the temperature crept to a balmy 34 degrees, more warm news greeted the University of San Diego’s historic volleyball team.
The Longhorns landed three All-Americans, too ... on the first team. Plus, another on the third team. And two more fell under the honorable mention category. In other words, all six starters earned some form of All-American recognition. It’s USD’s first trip to the national semifinals. Previous best postseason run? Four trips to the Sweet 16. The Toreros are from the little West Coast Conference, known best for Gonzaga’s men’s basketball team.
Texas’ two other first team All-Americans are outside hitter Logan Eggleston and libero Zoe Fleck. An Austin reporter made a big deal about how much the Longhorns want to send out Eggleston, a five-year star, with her first national championship. Texas’ press conference was nearly over before the Longhorns were even asked about USD. To his credit, Elliott could not have heaped more praise on the team that comes in riding a 28-match winning streak.
As for USD’s press conference, the most interesting subject that came up was what role being a mother plays in Petrie’s coaching.
