USD, picked for third place in preseason coaches poll, must prove it deserves to be regarded as class of the conference again
USD enjoyed a decade of dominance in the West Coast Conference from 2008-17, when the Toreros were picked for first place in the conference nine times in 10 years.
“There’s a little chip on the shoulder from being one game shy of winning conference,” Ungricht said. ”With our core group of guys returning, they had a taste of how close we were ... that confidence and that belief has carried into our January practices.”USD was picked for third place, behind defending champion Gonzaga and BYU .
The 15-man preseason all-WCC team included two Toreros — junior shortstop Cody Jefferis and sophomore outfielder Jack Costello.USD’s starting rotation received a big boost with the addition of graduate senior left-hander Ian Churchill and sophomore right-hander Ryan Kysar, a pair of transfers from the University of Arizona.
Other returners expected to move into the starting lineup or key back roles are five sophomores — corner infielder Kevin Sim , third baseman Chase Meidroth, infielder Will Worthington and outfielders Dustin Allen and Angelo Peraza — as well as junior designated hitter Max Jung-Goldberg .Redshirt freshman outfielder/left-hander Kyle Carr will start in center field — and make an impact on the mound — when he returns in three weeks or so.
