Reform UK took more votes than Labour's majority in both Tamworth and Mid Beds
Rishi Sunak risks being caught in a “pincer movement” losing voters both to Labour and to Reform UK, pollsters have suggested following the Tory Party’sReform UK, which was founded as the Brexit Party with the help of Nigel Farage, won more votes in both constituencies than Labour’s majorities, prompting concerns in the Tory ranks that the party could cost them some seats in a general election because of a split to their core vote.
Reform secured 1,487 votes in Mid Bedfordshire and 1,373 in Tamworth – in both instances more than Labour’s majority over the Conservatives. Polling guru Professor John Curtice said the rise of Reform could mean the Tories “may get caught in a pincer movement between some of their former Leave voters wandering off to Labour but others going off to Reform UK”.
He added: “The fact the Tory vote appears to be splintering in so many different ways – including to Reform UK on the right shows how strong the anti incumbent mood is and the difficulty of finding a strategy for recovery.”A senior Tory added: “Reform have quietly crept up the right side of us. We need to be careful of that. It could particularly hurt us in the red wall. That’s where Reform could do best and a lot of the Tory majorities are small.
