The Conservative party and some of its top MPs have declined to say they will return donations from hedge fund boss Crispin Odey following new allegations heThe pro-Brexit financier has given Tory MPs and central office more than £300,000 under the leaderships of David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.that he repeatedly harassed women who worked for his company, Odey Asset Management, or had other professional dealings with him.
Mr Odey’s donations to the Conservative party have added up to £265,400 between 2008 and 2019, including gifts of more than £25,000 shortly before the last general election, according to Electoral Commission data. He has also donated money to the local Tory associations of a number of leading MPs, including the sitting ministers Mark Harper, Jesse Norman and Zac Goldsmith.
The hedge fund manager gave £22,000 to the local party of Jacob Rees-Mogg in four instalments between 2010 and 2017, and £10,000 to Mr Johnson before the 2019 election. Other recipients include the constituency associations of Richard Graham, the veteran MP for Gloucester, and ex-ministers Nicholas Soames and Jo Johnson, both now Conservative members of the House of Lords.
A spokesman for the Conservative party declined to comment when asked if the party would consider returning the donations in light of the fresh allegations. A spokesman for Mr Johnson did not respond to a request for comment. The other serving MPs and ministers who benefited from donations either did not reply or refused to comment.
