Date published: Tuesday 31st January 2023 10:36 -Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Matt Doherty has had his ‘contract mutually terminated’ and he has since signed for Atletico Madrid.
A Spurs statement said: “We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.Doherty’s departure was set to be a loan – with Atletico Madrid his potential destination – but that would have taken Tottenham up to nine players out on loan and FIFA’s limit is eight.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano initially tweeted that Doherty’s move to Atletico will be a “straight loan”. He deleted that tweet after Spurs announced that he has in fact left the club permanently. The Republic of Ireland full-back made 71 appearances for Spurs after joining from Wolves in August 2020.“Matt Doherty is a new Red & White player!” the La Liga club tweeted.Earlier in the day, Djed Spence completed his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur to Ligue 1 side Rennes. He has barely featured for the Londoners since joining them in the summer from Middlesbrough.
Antonio Conte has made it clear that he is not a huge fan of his current crop of right-backs. These two exits leave him with just Emerson Royal to choose from,
