Irish Cancer Society sent mystery shoppers into 40 salons and found that two out of five salons did not ask the person's age or look for identification
The CEO of the Irish Cancer Society says the number of young people using sunbeds is very alarming. Averil Power has called on the Government to ensure there is much tougher enforcement of legislation banning under 18s from using them. The Irish Cancer Society, in conjunction with IPSOS/MRBI, sent mystery shoppers into 40 salons and found that two out of five salons did not ask the person's age or look for identification.
Salons caught breaking the law face fines of up to €5,000 and potential imprisonment. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms Power said it was clear that fines are not a deterrent. She added that skin cancer is on the rise in Ireland with 12,000 cases a year and it was vital that people understood the dangers of sunbeds, which are graded as a class one carcinogen. 1,110 of the 12,000 cases are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease.
