April 26, 2022 at 7:34 a.m.The new system for Diamond Head State Monument will become effective May 12, the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources announced Monday. TheOn the island of O’ahu near Waikiki, the volcanic crater with hiking trails is one of the state’s most visited sites.

“The new reservation system will mitigate environmental impacts sustained by foot traffic, reduce vehicle congestion in the park and surrounding neighborhoods, and improve the experience of kamaʻāina [locals] and visitors enjoying the monument,” the agency’s news release said. People with a Hawaii driver’s license or official state identification will have free access without reservations, but entry might depend on whether parking spaces are left.
