Irish radio DJ Tracy Clifford shares her experience with silent endometriosis and the emotional rollercoaster of IVF. She discusses the diagnosis, the impact on her fertility and mental health, and her decision to embrace life's uncertainties.
Tracy Clifford has admitted it took her and fiancé Mark a while to get to a place of being okay with the fact they might not have children. The 2FM presenter went public with her silent endometriosis diagnosis in 2023, explaining it was a medical reason as to why she wasn't becoming pregnant through IVF . Tracy, 44, wanted to raise awareness through sharing her story, and was overwhelmed at the response she got from so many women in a similar position.
The radio DJ went to see a specialist about the possibility of having the condition after an acupuncturist suggested it, and was diagnosed with stage 3 silent endometriosis. 'I never even knew that there was such a thing. But it was such a relief to know at last that there was a medical reason as to why the IVF wasn't working. Here was the missing piece after so many years of trying,' Tracy said. The RTE star felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. She continued: 'Naturally, you tend to blame yourself, wondering what is wrong with you or your partner. But I've since learned that one in 10 Irish women have endometriosis, which affects not only fertility but mental health and so much more.' Tracy and Mark have decided to take a break from IVF at the moment, but are open to seeing how things pan out in the future. The couple have learned that are certain things that are beyond their control and life is for living. 'If it works out that we have a family, great, but if it doesn't then we will be very happy with our life as well,' Tracy told the RTE Guide. 'It took a while for us to get to that place, of being okay with whatever life brings, but we are there now. My IVF story doesn't define me but it is part of what I am and so many people out there have a similar story. 'It was only after I told my own account, and my diagnosis with silent endometriosis, that I realised how many people were going through something similar. It's a journey of so many ups and downs, so hard on you emotionally and physically, so tough on the relationship as well. 'There are things that happen, over which you have no control, but I've always tried to live in the moment.' Tracy lives in her home in Crumlin with Mark and their pet dog, Harley. The pair have yet to tie the knot after postponing their wedding, but the broadcaster says they will say I do at some point. She added: 'We were supposed to get married in 2020, the first year of the pandemic, but we didn't. So we bought a house instead. We still haven't got married but we will; it will happen.
