Emergency services were called to the scene between junction eight for Chorley and junction six for Horwich this morning . It followed a 'report of a concern for welfare' shortly after 11am.
"Sadly, the woman fell from the bridge a short time later and despite the best efforts of emergency crews she was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing." A tweet update from National Highways North West said: "All lanes have now reopened on the #M61 in both directions between J6 and J8 following the earlier @LancsRoadPolice incident. There are delays of up to 30 minutes above usual journey times on approach both ways, please allow for extra journey time."
