A Learjet 55 carrying a young girl, her mother, and four crew members crashed shortly after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, resulting in the deaths of all six people on board. The aircraft burst into flames upon impact, engulfing nearby properties and vehicles. Authorities declared a major incident and advised the public to avoid the area as recovery efforts continue. The young girl was being transported from Philadelphia to Tijuana, Mexico, for medical treatment.
A young girl and her mother are among the dead following the second air tragedy to take place in the United States of America in a matter of days. At least six people - the mother, daughter and four crew members - were killed when the medical transport jet they were travelling on crashed to the ground mere moments after take-off in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania shortly after 6pm local time on Friday (11pm Irish time).
The aircraft - understood to be a Learjet 55, a Jet Rescue Air Ambulance - immediately burst into flames, which engulfed several properties and vehicles in the area as a major incident was declared by authorities. The public has been advised to stay away from the debris-laden neighbourhood in north-east Philadelphia as the recovery mission continues this morning. All six on board were believed to be from Mexico. The young girl had been receiving treatment in Philadelphia for a life-threatening condition, according to Jet Rescue Air Ambulance spokesperson Shai Gold, and she was being transported back to Tijuana, via Missouri, along with her mother. At a press conference on Friday night, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro told reporters that fatalities are to be expected following what he described as an 'awful aviation disaster.' 'We know that there will be loss,' he added. Flight Aware data shows the aircraft vanishing from radar after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport at 6.06pm local time and reaching an altitude of 1,600 feet. US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: 'So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost. Our people are totally engaged. 'First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job. More to follow. God Bless you all.' The disaster comes just two days after the plane tragedy in Washington DC that claimed 67 lives, becoming the USA's deadliest air disaster in more than two decades.
