I remember what I was like at Rose’s age and being entirely unable to articulate or explain how I really felt about my identity.
Kitty has helped Rose come to terms with feeling like a boy ‘Rose, you can’t move on with your life until you’ve told the people you love who you truly are.’ As I watched this heartwarming exchange on Hollyoaks where transgender woman Kitty Draper told 12-year-old Rose Lomax why coming out is important, I felt incredibly happy. An openly trans character helping someone discover their identity felt monumental to see on TV.
Commentary on gender identity is often incredibly negative, coloured by accusations of child abuse and exaggerated assertions about ‘desistance’ and transition regret. In reality, young people and their families go through years on waiting lists and to access life-saving healthcare. That could be the reality for Rose’s storyline, but for now, he’s starting on his journey to accept his transness – one step at a time.
