Sustainable transport group Transform Scotland said Scotland's six City Deals had missed an opportunity to prioritise green schemes over road-building.

Scotland's City Region Deals are “dirty deals” that have caused nearly £1billion of transport investment to go on high-carbon road projects, new research claims.

But despite Scotland’s legally-binding climate targets, Transform Scotland said a whopping 70 per cent of those funds have gone on road-building instead of eco schemes. In the north, local campaigners have repeatedly accused ministers of breaking promises to dual and upgrade the A9 and A96 - which they say will improve congestion and make the roads safer.

“But local and national politicians have instead blown the cash on a new round of road-building that will inevitably generate more traffic and higher emissions. "We’re fed up with Scotland's political class mouthing empty platitudes about ‘net zero’ and ‘anti-poverty’ yet decade after decade making deliberate decisions to build new infrastructure that makes the country’s climate failure more and more certain.”
