Travel ban on Irish flight attendant Tori Towey detained in Dubai lifted
AN Irish victim of domestic violence who was detained by Dubai cops and charged with “attempted suicide” has spoken of her relief after being allowed to return home.
She had been forced to stay in a rented apartment in Dubai with mum Caroline, who flew out to support her daughter. And in a major development on Wednesday, Taoiseach Simon Harris revealed that Dubai’s travel ban on Ms Towey had been lifted. He said: “A woman who has been a victim of a brutal attack found herself waking up not in hospital, but in a police station.”The Taoiseach issued a special message of thanks to our embassy for its behind-the-scenes work on the case to get Tori free.Crusading lawyer and human rights campaigner Radha Stirling had first highlighted Tori’s plight.
“She is so grateful to the support of the Irish people, the media and the Irish Government, who I must commend for their swift response.“Diplomatic conversations happened and developed quickly behind closed doors.“Tori has been really overwhelmed in a good way with all the support she has received. Ann told how her stressed niece was facing “no light at the end of the tunnel” until dramatic diplomatic interventions from Ireland.Ann, who spoke to Tori’s mum Caroline on the phone after news broke that travel ban had been lifted, said: “Life starts again.Another aunt, Trish Beirne, called it “great news” that Tori was coming home and also paid tribute to friends in the Roscommon area who had offered support to the family.
