The trial of those indicted for the killing of Irish peacekeeper Sean Rooney has been postponed until September 17, 2025. Private Rooney was shot dead in December 2022 while on UNIFIL peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. The Tánaiste and Defence Minister Simon Harris expressed disappointment over the postponement and the absence of the accused in court.
The trial of those indicted of killing Irish peacekeeper Sean Rooney has been postponed until September. Private Rooney was shot dead aged 24 near the town of Al-Aqbiya in the south of Lebanon while on UNIFIL peacekeeping duties in December 2022.
The Department was represented in court on Wednesday by its Beirut-based lawyer and the Irish Ambassador to Lebanon was also in attendance. Private Rooney and his colleague Trooper Shane Kearney were injured on December 14, 2022, when more than 25 shots were fired at their vehicle. The case is being dealt with by the Lebanese authorities. This is because the incident did not happen within the immediate area of responsibility of UNIFIL.
“The Government has repeatedly stressed the need for justice to be served in this case and has, on a number of occasions, raised the issue with the Lebanese defence and foreign affairs ministers.
