There’s a secret tribute to Gregg and Duane Allman on Jimmy Hall’s new album, and even producer Joe Bonamassa, who helped shape the song, didn’t know who wrote it at first.

During the time when the album was taking shape, Jimmy Hall said, his oldest son, James Ryan Shelton Hall, had a “milestone birthday” and set himself two goals. One was to run a marathon, which he did in March; the other was to get a song on the new album on merit.

“The subject matter, as he [Ryan Hall] described it to me is all about Gregg Allman and Duane Allman and their brotherhood and their relationship, and growing up as two brothers…and the big brother is kind of the father figure,” Hall said. Hall said he didn’t initially let Bonamassa know who wrote the song; he didn’t want it to get undue preference as they sorted through material. But Bonamassa latched onto it immediately and envisioned an arrangement.

Jimmy Hall says the process of creating his new album "Ready Now" "re-lit a spark of creativity in me that was kind of dormant."“I feel like he carried a lot of guilt around,” said Hall. “And I was around him. I played with Gregg in Gregg Allman & Friends from 1994 to 1998 or so. Every year we did a Gregg Allman and Friends tour. So, I saw him at one point where he decided to become sober.
