Tommy Cassidy played at the 1982 World Cup in Spain when Northern Ireland famously defeated the hosts

Tributes have been paid to former Northern Ireland midfielder and World Cup '82 hero Tommy Cassidy who has died at the age of 73 following a battle with Alzheimer's.

He also played for clubs including Burnley - where he won the old Third Division title in 1982 - and Apoel, winning the Cypriot Cup in 1984. Newcastle United said: “In recent years, Cassidy suffered with Alzheimer's disease, but was a regular attendee at the club's Memory Café, a drop-in session at St. James' Park for those living with life-changing memory loss illnesses.The official Northern Ireland football page said on social media: "We are saddened today to learn of the passing of Tommy Cassidy, one of our heroes from España 82. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.

Workington AFC said on X: "It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Tommy Cassidy who died on Thursday at the age of 73. Rest in Peace, Tommy."
