Derry Easter parade cancelled after journalist Lyra McKee shot dead as Saoradh issue statement
Tributes have been pouring in for journalist Lyra McKee who was murdered in Co Derry on Thursday night.
A Saoradh spokesman said: "During this attack on the community, a Republican Volunteer attempted to defend people from the PSNI/RUC. It read: “We want to express our condemnation in the strongest terms possible at the murder of journalist Lyra McKee. “We reiterate our support for the PSNI, who while carrying out their duties were also the target of last night’s attack. We call on anyone with any information to bring that forward to the police and assist their inquiries.Assistant Chief Constable for District Policing Mark Hamilton said: “Lyra McKee was murdered during orchestrated violence in Creggan last night.
Police were in the Creggan area last night, carrying out searches for firearms and explosives they believe are being stored by dissident republicans for a number of planned attacks. “Coming up to 11pm we estimate there were about 100 people in the area including young people and members of the media. It was around this time that the gunman fired a number of shots.
“The shock over what happened here in this city last night is hanging heavy over the entire community today. “We have all lost an incredible young talent. I had the opportunity to speak with Lyra on a number of occasions as a journalist, as will politicians and leaders from all parties and communities. She had a passionate thirst for the truth and for telling the stories of people who had been forgotten or abandoned.
DUP East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell said: “People not just in Londonderry but across Northern Ireland are waking up to the awful news that a young woman has been murdered in Creggan last night in the middle of an orchestrated riot against Police. "Their intolerable actions are rejected by the overwhelming majority of people who want to build a peaceful and more prosperous future for everyone in Northern Ireland."
Alliance Leader Naomi Long said: “I am utterly shocked to hear this news and feel devastated for Lyra’s partner, family, friends and loved ones. Ulster Unionist leader Robin Swann said: “I was absolutely shocked and appalled to hear of the murder of journalist Lyra McKee. She was held in the highest regard and had an immensely bright future ahead. My thoughts and condolences are with Lyra's partner, family, friends and colleagues in journalism. A precious life has been lost.
