A report published by the Inspector of Prisons detailed how Syed's 'shocked' cellmate found him dead having earlier watched TV with him and seeing him in a 'jovial' mood.
Triple killer Sameer Syed took his own life just hours after meeting with a psychologist to discuss his murder trial the following week, a report has found.
The report stated this meeting “related to his upcoming trial and was organised by his legal team,” and that it ended at approximately 12:15pm. The psychologist later stated that Syed had denied any thoughts of self harm in that meeting. Gardai also attended the scene at 4:54pm and funeral directors ultimately removed Syed’s remains just before 10pm.
Upon his return to the cell he saw Syed who had at that point taken his own life. He quickly exited the cell and stated that he “stood with my back to the cell, facing the railings.” Prison officers ran into the cell, he said and he walked away towards the end of the landing in a “shocked” state. The report also details how Syed was assessed on committal - and was found not to be suffering from any mental illnesses or psychosis.
In July 2021 he was seen by a Psychiatric Doctor, a nurse and a Forensic Community Mental Health Nurse at the Central Mental Hospital who following assessment recorded that he “did not impress with active symptoms of a major affective or psychotic illness," and recommended that he be discharged to the care of the prison GP.
