Ireland striker Troy Parrott came up against Ireland Under-21 defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty on Sunday - and it was the Dubliner who emerged victorious. Parrott netted his 16th goal of the season in a 2-0 win for AZ Alkmaar against PEC Zwolle, a result that moved Parrott and his teammates into fourth place in the Eredivisie table.
The forward tapped home from close range to net his fifth goal in six games. He has now scored in each of his last four outings. It’s a timely run of form, with the weeks ticking down before Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson names his squad for the Nations League promotion/relegation play-off against Bulgaria. Parrott won’t be the only player hoping to hear from Hallgrímsson. Garcia MacNulty has been outstanding in central defence for PEC Zwolle this season. He has moved back to his preferred position after spending most of last season at left-back - a role that has proved problematic for the Boys in Green in recent years. Parrott’s run of form since Dutch football resumed after the winter break began with his Europa League winner against Serie A giants Roma. He has since scored against Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros, Willem II, Quick Boys in the KNVB Cup and now PEC Zwolle. His 12 league goals mean he is now second in the Eredivisie goalscoring charts, five behind leader Sem Steijn of Twente.
