President Trump's inauguration marks a dramatic return to power, filled with ambitious promises and controversial plans. From sending Americans to Mars to 'taking back' the Panama Canal, Trump lays out a vision for a resurgent America.

Donald Trump today declared the USA would enter a 'golden age' and made a flurry of pledges including sending Americans to Mars, to 'take back' the Panama Canal and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The 47th President said he would immediately begin issuing executive orders that would designate cartels as terrorist organisations, send the military to the southern border with Mexico and tackle gender recognition. He is expected to sign upward of 200 executive orders today.

In a nod to his felony convictions last year, Trump said he would end the weaponisation of the justice system in America. Trump and his supporters believe the charges against him were politically motivated. The 47th President reiterated his worldview that America had supported foreign governments and become entangled in conflicts on other continents. He recalled his assassination attempt in July and claimed his survival was by God's design to 'make America great again.' Trump campaigned on a transformative vision of America promising mass deportations, swift ends to conflicts and improving the living standards for millions of people in the country. The Republican previously made outlandish declarations stating he would 'act like a dictator for a day' leading to condemnation from his detractors. Taking back the Panama Canal In Trump's inauguration speech, Trump slammed Panama claiming that China had taken over the canal, despite providing no evidence it had. Trump has repeatedly said the US, which completed the canal in 1914, should take back the strip of land. American president Jimmy Carter agreed to give the territory to Panama, something Trump has often said should be reversed. He has not ruled out taking military action to regain control of the canal. Renaming the Gulf of Mexico On of Trump's more bizarre pledges has been to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. The personal project appears to be part of a greater element of Trump's nationalist agenda which, in his view, will strengthen the US. Mission to Mars Trump told inauguration attendees the US would 'pursue our manifest destiny into the stars by launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.' The declaration was met with applause by his supporters, including SpaceX CEO Elon Musk who was seen giving an enthusiastic thumbs up after hearing the pledge. Immigration Trump said he would declare a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico, designate cartels as terrorist organisations and introduce the death penalty for illegal immigrants who 'maim and murder' Americans. President Trump said he would suspend refugee resettlement and that Armed Forces, including the National Guard, would be deployed at the border. The Republican said he would reinstate his 'Remain in Mexico' policy that would require asylum seekers to stay in the country while waiting for their hearings in the US. Defining 'sex' The 47th President said he would sign an executive order that said the policy of the US would recognise two sexes - male and female. The change would see government agencies use the definitions on documents such as passports and visas. Another order would end diversity, equity and inclusion programmes, better known as DEI, as well as ending diversity training. Energy dominance Trump will end the administration of Joe Biden's policies to tackle climate change, namely by permitting oil drilling in the US. He claimed the actions would unleash American energy and make costs more affordable for people living in the country. He is also expected to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord, the treaty is a binding agreement among signatories to reduce emissions in their respective countries. He also vowed to introduce more mining in the country to provide energy security for America. Trump's return to the White House has been remarkable with many political observers believing his chances at a second term being finished following the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Two separate impeachment attempts against Trump failed and he was able to rebuild his public image during his easy run for the Republican party nomination. Despite predications of a closely-fought presidential race against Democrat candidate and former Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump swept all swing states in the election and won a convincing victor
