Former President Donald Trump says he has no interest in being speaker of the House despite staunch allies in the Republican Party promoting the idea.
The political gambit has been proposed over the past year as a means by which Trump could lead an impeachment effort against President Joe Biden, most recently by Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz at Trump's rally in Georgia over the weekend, but when pressed on it in a new interview, Trump said he's got other plans in mind.
"No, I think it's not something I want to do. A lot of people bring it up. It's brought up all the time. No, it's not something I want to do. I want to look at what's happening, and then we're going to be doing something else. No, it's not something I would be interested in," he told Just the News founder John Solomon and Real America's Voice correspondent Amanda Head at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Trump says he is not interested in becoming Speaker of the House if Republicans retake control and he is nominated pic.twitter.com/pPKJgjtySF — Aaron Rupar March 30, 2022 Every speaker thus far has been an elected House member, though they are not required to be.Gaetz proposed at the rally that Trump take the job. “Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden, and I'm going to nominate Donald J. Trump for speaker of the United States House of Representatives!” Gaetz said. Also encouraging Trump to become speaker, before making an even bigger move, was Steve Bannon.
Trump has been coy about his plans for 2024, focusing more of his time and energy on complaining about the 2020 election results and endorsing favorable candidates for the 2022 election. But a new poll shows he has support that surpasses that of Biden as well as Vice President Kamala Harris if they were to face off in a matchup today.
