Leavitt, when pressed on whether the tariffs would actually take effect on Saturday, affirmed that they would begin on February 1.“If the president at any time decides to roll back those tariffs, I’ll leave it to him to make that decision. But starting tomorrow, those tariffs will be in place,” she said. She declined to say if there would be any exemptions to goods covered by the tariffs.
Trump campaigned on a pledge to impose sweeping tariffs abroad as part of an expansive agenda that aims to reshape the US economy and its ties with other nations. But the first two weeks of his term spurred uncertainty over whether he would follow through, with some leaders speculating that his threats were intended to just buy him leverage.
