Trust me, the best thing you can do this New Year's Eve is stay at home 🔵 For too long, I’ve been gripped by FOMO on New Year’s Eve. But this year will be different… ✒️ kubared

For too long, I’ve been gripped by FOMO on New Year’s Eve. But this year will be different… won’t it?They say the worst is over. We’ve scoffed down our Christmas meals, suffered the company of family members we spend most of the year avoiding, relinquished control of the remote to the kids. Now, we have New Year’s Eve to look forward to – apparently.

We can let our hair down, drink too much, and look forward to the next 12 months, our hopes and dreams foisted onto them with the same naivety we always embrace at this time of year. Because, we tell ourselves, this year will be different. Better. We’ll be different. Better. Even if, deep down, we know nothing will have changed. Not really.celebrations… in theory.

Last year, I almost avoided it. I’d had a lovely, carefree night at home with friends that probably should have ended there. We drank, danced, laughed and squealed at the neighbours setting offdangerously close to the crowd which had come outside for an ogle. It should have been enough. But then FOMO set in, clouding my ability to call it a night, taunting me about what it meant that I wasn’t out there in the world with all the other partygoers and people with lives much more exciting than mine.

So, off a small group of us went to an event I’d bought tickets for the week prior in preparation for such malaise. Sparing you the embarrassing details, I wound up engaging in what has become a very depressing yearly ritual: crying about the shortcomings in my life, slurring my words and willing in hangxiety so intense that it clouded any positive memory of the night before.
