Exclusive: Rose McKinney is appealing for any other living mothers from the Tuam home to come forward and 'tell their story'

A woman who lived in the controversial Tuam mother and baby home has described the nuns as “antichrists”.

Rose said: “I don’t really talk about it much, my daughter Margaret would only have learned about it around 20 years ago. “The only politician I have ever told my story to is Joe Costello. I told him 20 years ago and he has supported me ever since. Just him and his wife. The research of Catherine Corless made international headlines and resulted in a Commission of Inquiry which has released a number of interim reports since 2015.

“If you were to think about it it could nearly kill you. I am only speaking about it now because there are a few things I want to say.Rose was born in Dunmore in 1938 and is the youngest of nine children, while she doesn’t wish to talk of the circumstances surrounding her pregnancies, she said a priest came to her home “demanding” she move into the Tuam home to have her baby.
