While the vote has yet to be formally announced, all signs point to Erdogan extending his rule into a third decade. It entrenches Turkey's executive presidency system, where a president can rule by decree. The opposition had argued this is undemocratic and leaves the president unaccountable, and wanted to scrap it.
Mr Erdogan's rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu is not well known outside Turkey but to Western policy makers he had offered a tonic to the friction and frustrations generated by Mr Erdogan. We highly appreciate your personal contribution to the strengthening of friendly Russian-Turkish relations and mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas. I would like to confirm our readiness to continue our constructive dialogue on topical issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda. We attach great importance to the consistent implementation of the planned joint projects, primarily the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and the creation of a gas hub in Turkey.
He says he will"continue to struggle" to defend Turkey's rights, before specifically thanking"women and young people".He continues:"The people's wish to support an authoritarian regime has come across."He concludes by thanking the 25 million people who voted for him - and says the"battle continues".Opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu will be speaking any moment now.
