"We call on the Israeli authorities to take the necessary measures immediately so that these practices that violate the sanctity and the status based on international law of the Al Aqsa Mosque are not allowed and tensions do not escalate," it added. There was heavy police presence at the compound, with officers even scaling the Qibli Mosque, one of the main prayer halls in the complex.Over the past week, several Jewish extremist groups urged settlers to storm Al Aqsa during the Rosh Hashanah holiday.
