Zappone tells Dáil of Tusla’s concern over current child protection standards in scouting body
The State child and family agency has expressed “serious concerns” with current child protection standards in Scouting Ireland, Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has told the Dáil.
There should be an “immediate review” of the current standards around the supervision of children in the organisation, and Scouting Ireland should “consider the viability” of continuing to run overnight camping trips. Details from the ongoing review has suggested information was covered up, and alleged perpetrators were permitted to move between groups. In the wake of the scandal, Scouting Ireland set up a helpline, for alleged abuse victims to contact the organisation. However, Tusla has now recommended the organisation consider the helpline be run independently of the youth organisation.
