Two new businesses now filling a strip mall near Woodman’s grocery store have “flavorful” backstories that led to their putting down roots in Carpentersville.

Jonathan Washington says he turned a passion into a business when he opened Unique Coffee Cafe in Carpentersville.

For Jonathan Washington, the changes brought on during the world health crisis were behind his decision to go into business, he said.The Pingree Grove man was managing contract drivers for Amazon when he started reevaluating what he wanted to do with his life. He decided he’d like to start a business focused on something he was passionate about, he said.Jonathan Washington, of Pingree Grove, opened Unique Coffee Cafe this winter at 2168 N. Randall Road in Carpentersville.

The biggest seller so far has been the Tomorrow Latte, which includes a shot of espresso and a choice of milk types. The biggest selling food item so far has been spicy chicken quesadillas, Washington said. Other menu options are a grilled cheese sandwich with provolone, pepper jack and cheddar, a spicy chicken on sourdough, a turkey and cheese wrap, a turkey sausage, egg and cheese burrito, and an almond butter and apple jelly sandwich, which Washington said pairs nicely with coffee.
