UPDATE: Four people were rescued after they were tossed into the turbulent water of Clear Creek while tubing Tuesday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident and rescues in Clear Creek Canyon unfolded at about 12:30 p.m. when four people got into the river just east of Tunnel One, said Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman. All four were thrown from their tubes in an area that prohibits tubing.
A woman in the group, who was found clinging to a rock in the river, was rescued by Golden and Arvada fire department swift water rescue crews, Kelley said. She was taken to a local hospital. One man, was found unconscious in the river and was also transported to a local hospital. Further details on the conditions of the pair hospitalized was not available. Two men were able to get out of the river on their own.
Tubing is prohibited on the river in the canyon and the order is posted, Kelley said. A woman, also part of a group, died Saturday in a tubing incident along the same stretch of the river. On Tuesday, U.S. 6 was closed in Clear Creek Canyon from Colorado 58 in Golden to Tunnel One, the sheriff’s office said in 1:15 p.m. tweet. The sheriff’s office, at 2:01 p.m., announced that the canyon had reopened to traffic in both directions.
