Two programs underway now aim to build more electric vehicle charging stations along Indiana highways to reduce range anxiety for drivers.
Carl Lisek, executive director of South Shore Clean Cities, demonstrates how to use an electric vehicle charging station in Portage on Monday, March 29, 2021. But Lisek, executive director of Drive Clean Indiana, which promotes using alternative fuels, admits they’ve had concern about finding the next charging station on long trips.
Also, a program overseen by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management plans to build 61 new DC Fast EV charging stations, for drivers going between cities, across Indiana by 2023. Ten of those would be in Lake and Porter counties. IDEM’s Indiana Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Program plans to announce its EV installation plans at Drive Clean Indiana’s annual conference in Michigan City on Aug. 9.More than 300 EV charging stations are scattered around Indiana now, though most don’t meet the newest standards for fast-charging wattage or location near an interstate highway.
