Last night, there were scuffles with police who drew their batons in Trafalgar Square to subdue 100 troublemakers, many with faces covered, who refused to leave the area. Scotland Yard said seven people were arrested. The protests – repeated in cities around Britain – came as the Middle East teetered on the edge of all-out conflict. On a day of intense drama:

A purple-haired student with a megaphone whipped up the crowd with chants of: 'Intifada revolution!'. Someone else cries: 'Intifada till victory!' using the Arabic word for 'uprising'. The march reached the theatre-goers of Haymarket. Bill and Kate Burden, both 67, from Kettering stared with bemusement at the parade of flags and placards as helicopters circled above. 'It all seems so aggressive, doesn't it?' said Kate, 'Like something from another country, like, well, the Middle East.
