Last night, there were scuffles with police who drew their batons in Trafalgar Square to subdue 100 troublemakers, many with faces covered, who refused to leave the area. Scotland Yard said seven people were arrested. The protests – repeated in cities around Britain – came as the Middle East teetered on the edge of all-out conflict. On a day of intense drama:

The march reached the theatre-goers of Haymarket. Bill and Kate Burden, both 67, from Kettering stared with bemusement at the parade of flags and placards as helicopters circled above. 'It all seems so aggressive, doesn't it?' said Kate, 'Like something from another country, like, well, the Middle East.
