Experts in police training who reviewed videos said they believed there was no justification for the actions of the police officers involved, who have been charged with crimes including second-degree murder.SAPD Chief William McManus has publicly deplored the “callousness” of the Memphis police officers who beat and kicked Black motorist Tyre Nichols to death.
“Nationwide, officers dedicated to serving their communities are disgusted wondering ‘why… how?’” the chief wrote.Get the morning headlines in your inbox The video shows a group of police officers, who are also Black, kicking Nichols in the head, pepper-spraying him and repeatedly striking him with a baton while he lay on the ground, even though he showed no signs of fighting back.
