The British government imposed new restrictions in England, including a work from home order and a requirement for proof of vaccination for nightclubs, and warned that Covid-19 infections caused by the Omicron variant are doubling every two or three days

LONDON—The British government warned that Covid-19 infections caused by the Omicron variant are doubling every two or three days, as it imposed new restrictions in England, including a work from home order and a requirement for proof of vaccination for indoor venues such as nightclubs., which British authorities say could crowd out the currently dominant Delta variant within weeks and result in over a million total Covid-19 infections by the end of the month. Britain has recorded 10.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid told lawmakers in Parliament that public-health officials estimate the number of infections is around 20 times higher than the number of confirmed cases. “The number of infections is closer to 10,000,” he said. Results of lab tests published this week suggest the variant can partially evade the protection against infection afforded by vaccines. But scientists are optimistic the shots will still protect people against severe illness and death, especiallyScientists and vaccine makers are investigating Omicron, a Covid-19 variant with around 50 mutations, that has been detected in many countries after spreading in southern Africa. Here’s what we know as the U.S. and others implement travel restrictions.

Still the sudden imposition of restrictions caught many in the government off guard. Until Tuesday, ministers said new measures weren’t needed despite the virus’s spread because hospitalization levels have remained relatively flat.
