U.S. men’s soccer coach Gregg Berhalter said the players and coaches had no advance knowledge of the since-deleted post that erased the emblem from Iran’s flag in a sign of solidarity with protesters

DOHA, Qatar—A day after the U.S. Soccer Federation deleted a social media post with an altered version of the Iranian flag ahead of their crucial World Cup clash, American coach Gregg Berhalter apologized on behalf of the players and staff for causing offense—even though he said they had no advance knowledge of the federation’s plans.

U.S. Soccer declined to say whose idea the post was or when it was conceived. When the post was deleted Sunday, a spokesman said that decision came after more internal conversations on the matter. A screenshot of a social media post by the U.S. Soccer Federation displayed Iran’s national flag without the emblem of the Islamic Republic.Iranian officials had responded to the initial post on Sunday with an official complaint to FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, and sought to have the U.S. sanctioned ahead of Tuesday’s match. The U.S. and Iran are due to meet at Al Thumama Stadium here with a place in the Round of 16 on the line. The loser is guaranteed to be eliminated.

“I need to be with my mind preparing them to play the best football on the day,” Queiroz said. “If my mind falls into the trap to pay attention to those things, I’m lying to football.” “We have our solidarity with all, all, human, humanitarian causes,” Queiroz said. “But we have solidarity with humanitarian causes all over the world, wherever they are, who they are, even if we talk about human rights, racism, kids that die in schools with shootings.”
