U.S. House N.J. lawmaker’s bill on bomb threats against schools and places of worship

The Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill received a bomb threat in March 2022.At a time when schools and places of worship have been hit with bomb threats and actual bombings have risen dramatically, the U.S. House on Tuesday passed legislation designed to make it easier for the Department of Homeland Security to respond to the attacks.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-7th Dist., would establish a permanent Office of Bombing Prevention within DHS, and make it eligible for direct federal funding. The office would be charged with providing training and assistance to organizations about bomb threats; developing a strategy for dealing with explosive devices; sharing information among federal, state and local officials and the public; and working with other countries to address terrorist attacks.“We do know we have a domestic terrorism problem in America,” Malinowski told NJ Advance Media. “Bomb threats can be incredibly disruptive.

While the bill does not specifically address domestic terrorism like the recent killings in Buffalo, Malinowski said that the training and increased communication provided for in the legislation would help responses to all attacks, not just bomb threats.from 251 in 2019, a 71% increase, according to the U.S. Bomb Center’s Explosive Incidents Report. That’s even as bomb threats declined to 818 in 2020 from 1,089 the previous year, a 25% drop.
