The U.S. was elected back onto the United Nations Human Rights Council Thursday, three years after former President Donald Trump’s administration dramatically pulled out over the assembly’s “chronic bias against Israel” and the dubious human rights records of some of the council’s member countries.... [+]The U.S. received 168 votes out of the 193 members of the U.N. General Assembly in a secret ballot, and ran unopposed.

The country’s three-year term will begin on Jan. 1, along with the terms of 17 other member states elected to the Human Rights Council Thursday, and will last until 2024. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. nominated by President Joe Biden, said in a statement Thursday that returning to full membership will allow the U.S. to “fully participate” in the council’s goal of “
