Mark McCabe, a landscaper who worked as a creative consultant for U2, was sentenced to a suspended term and ordered to pay compensation after knocking an airport worker unconscious in a dispute over a boarding pass.
A landscape gardener, described as a 'creative consultant' for U2, has avoided jail time after punching a Dublin Airport worker unconscious. Mark McCabe, 58, an accomplished gardener who once reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to assault causing harm to an airline staffer on November 9, 2023.
McCabe, from London, was fined €500, payable within six months, and received a three-month suspended sentence on the condition he pays €2,000 compensation to the victim. McCabe claimed he was in Dublin to discuss a project. He was scheduled to fly home but became involved in an altercation with the airport worker regarding his boarding pass. According to court testimony, McCabe 'scanned his card without being invited to do so.' When questioned, he reportedly replied, 'Okay, I made a mistake; what are you going to do about it?' When staff asked him to lower his voice, McCabe demanded to speak to a manager. He was advised to wait, calm down, and take a seat, or he would be banned from boarding due to his disruptive behavior. Instead of complying, McCabe punched the official in the jaw, knocking him unconscious, and sustained a swollen fist after delivering the blow. The victim suffered soft tissue injuries, was treated with painkillers, and took a week off work on medical advice. Judge John Hughes heard that McCabe had previously told the court, 'I have mobility issues with my hands,' but later changed his initial not-guilty plea and admitted to the offence. McCabe gave a relative's address at Kilcross Square, Sandyford, Dublin 18, but lives in London. He must maintain the peace for two years, remain under probation supervision, complete anger-management counselling, and have no contact with the victim. McCabe's solicitor, John Feaheny, stated that his client was ashamed, appalled and genuinely remorseful for his actions. The defense also highlighted that McCabe was stressed from work at the time of the incident and had recently been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, for which he was seeking treatment.
