The UH System Board of Regents passed a new"post-tenure review" policy in December, creating consistency among all departments and mandating that they hold their tenured faculty to higher scrutiny when they fail their annual performance reviews. Faculty Senate President Senate Dave Shattuck said some academic departments held the reviews more often than others, but a lack of consistency created a frustrating environment for productive faculty members who felt some of their coworkers weren’t being held accountable, he said.“It is both true that academic freedom is important and allows us as faculty to try to get to the truth… and at the same time that tenure can be misused,” Shattuck said.
If those tenured faculty fail their performance evaluations in two of any three consecutive periods – both for teaching or both for research – they have to face the additional post-tenure review evaluation that addresses long-term performance. Mark Jones, a political science fellow at Rice University’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, said he doesn’t anticipate that Patrick will be able to pass legislation this session related to tenure and CRT. He’s instead sending a message, Jones said, that there may be potential sanctions in the future if they don’t curtail teaching of the theory in the classroom.
Tenure is an attractive option for faculty members not only because it’s considered an indefinite appointment except in extraordinary circumstances, but also because it gives professors the job protection to study and teach the topics of their choosing. That “academic freedom” is the foundation of universities and is affirmed in the 1940 statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, from the American Association of University Professors.
