“There’s a sense of newness in the program with two new assistant coaches, as important as they are,” Whitting said. “It’s rejuvenated the returning players and myself just to have some new blood in here and some new ideas of ways to do things.” The newcomers will blend with a core group of holdovers that includes first baseman and top returning hitter Ryan Hernandez, who has 16 home runs the past two seasons; shortstop Ian McMillian; closer Derrick Cherry, who posted 2.85 ERA and five saves in 19 appearances last season; and righthanders Jaycob Deese and Ben Sears.Not much went right a year ago as the Cougars went 19-34 and finished next-to-last in the eight-team American Athletic Conference.
