“Brexit is truly done”, a foreign diplomat says amid senior Government sources’ hopes that DUP will end its boycott of powersharing after May’s local elections 🔴 singharj reports
could finally be solved by summer amid a growing belief in the UK and EU that their divorce is finally “done” following the formal signing of the Windsor Framework.
Polling suggesting the DUP could lose seats while Sinn Féin, cross-community Alliance and hardline unionist Traditional Unionist Voice make gains could persuade Sir Jeffrey Donaldson’s party that there is little ongoing political gain in its Stormont boycott, sources believe. One foreign diplomat said: “Brexit is truly done,” while noting Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s meeting with EU chief negotiator Maros Sefcovic on Friday to sign off on the framework has been seen as a low-key event compared with past Brexit summits.
Following talks with Mr Heaton-Harris in Belfast, Sir Jeffrey however insisted the framework was a “sticking plaster” and called for the UK Government to “sort this out” with work to ensure arrangements “respect Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom and its internal market”.
