Declan Power: UK explosives terror 'has none of the hallmarks of previous IRA attacks'
The recent finding of a series of devices in London has concentrated minds back on the potential threat from dissident Irish terrorists. The nature of the device, which combusted as opposed to exploded, indicates this was a relatively unsophisticated mechanism and not designed to kill, maim or do maximum damage.
From the other perspective this certainly does not follow the modus operandi of any Islamic extremist faction. Detonators which activate without attachment to actual explosives can cause exactly the small incendiary event as occurred in London.
