The UK government has withdrawn funding for the redevelopment of Casement Park in Belfast, effectively ending hopes of the city hosting matches at Euro 2028. Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn cited a surge in costs and potential delays in completion as reasons for the decision.
The group of five associations - The Ireland & UK 2028 Partnership - on Friday night reacted to the news that Casement Park would not receive funding from the UK government.Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn made the announcement, stating that a rise in costs and the likelihood of the redevelopment not being complete ahead of the finals were the factors behind the decision.
A spokesperson for the Ireland & UK 2028 Central Transition Team said: “The Ireland & UK 2028 Partnership note the UK Government’s position regarding Casement Park. “We remain fully committed to ensuring UEFA EURO 2028 is an outstanding sporting celebration that is inclusive to all and delivers great benefits for communities across the nations.”He wrote: “The estimated build costs have risen dramatically, from £180m when the Euro 2028 bid was awarded in October 2023 to potentially over £400m, and there is a significant risk that it would not be built in time for the tournament.
