A report by an influential think tank identifies Ireland's 'flimsy' defences as a security risk for Britain
Britain has been urged to increase its military presence in Northern Ireland – because of the Republic’s lack of proper defence.
It says the Republic plays very little part in European defence co-operation, and its forces – especially maritime – need rapid strengthening to be capable of defending against today’s threats.“The UK should certainly encourage this. But the current threats to our own security are growing and urgent,” the report states.
We have no combat jets to protect our skies – and we now only have the capability to put one Naval Service vessel out to sea at a time because of staff shortages. “In an age of growing geopolitical threats, this gap in the UK’s north-western defences now directly endangers its national security. ”
